Some questions from a non-tech person

I’m hoping this is the correct place for my questions:

We are a cancer support organization and would be using this on our website to function as an online support group. I have read through all of the info on WordPress and this website, as well as many of the discussion topics in these forums, but I still have several questions. (I am not a tech person although I do manage our WordPress website with help when needed from our tech  consultant.)

Here are my questions:

  • Can the forum be set so that only registered users are able see topics and discussions? I want to be sure visitors to our website will not see anything other than the forum names, unless they register to use them. Confidentiality is critical.
  • What is the difference between an administrator and a moderator?
  • Do administrators and/or moderators need login access to our overall website (not just the forums)?
  • Can admins/moderators automatically receive notification of all posts (new topics as well as new posts to existing topics)?
  • Is there a limit to the number of admins/moderators?
  • Specifically what statistics are provided?
  • Do you know of any websites using your plugin as an online support group? If so, I would love to see them. (I looked at your Showcase forum and didn’t see any)

Yes, just enable the “Forum visible to logged in users only” option in the settings.

What is the difference between an administrator and a moderator?

An administrator has access to all functionality of the forum in the WordPress backend and frontend. A moderator only has access to the administration functionality in the frontend, e.g. close/delete/edit/move topics and posts.

Do administrators and/or moderators need login access to our overall website

Yes, because the forum is using the default WordPress user management so of course they need a WordPress account on your website.

Can admins/moderators automatically receive notification of all posts (new topics as well as new posts to existing topics)?

For ne topics: Yes. There is an option for this in the backend-profile. For new posts they have to subscribe to specific topics to prevent mail-flooding. But it would be possible to implement this functionality via some custom-code as well. Let me know if you need more information about this.

Is there a limit to the number of admins/moderators?

No.

Specifically what statistics are provided?

Those which you can also see here in the overview (number of users/posts/topics). I dont collect more sensitive data by default because there are better analytic-tools available for this.

Do you know of any websites using your plugin as an online support group?
