I use a plugin to handle all the external links (open in new tab, nofollow) on a project of a client. If you set all the external links to “nofollow”, it will be much less interesting for spammers because they mostly want to get “dofollow” links to their website.

I’m also thinking about to add some features to my Plugin “Toolbox for Asgaros Forum” to reduce spam, but I’m not sure how long it will take to implement it since I’m quite busy at the moment.
