Profiles showing on Google

Hi there,

Thank you so much for all your work!

Our user profiles are showing up in Google search engines and we want to make sure that doesn’t happen. I have the profiles themselves hidden so when you click on them it just redirects you to the front of the forum but we’d really like for those names emails etc. to not show up at all on search engine.

Hey @mkykits,

do you use any membership plugin or is it the usual Forum Profile?

Just for clarification: all the profiles were public, but you restricted them now? How did you set this up?

Hi Thanks for responding!

We are using it on a Memberpress site and we’ve made it a “members-only” forum. I had a thought last night – that our site was still allowing Google to catalog everything, even the content behind paywall or hidden. So I turned that off and it now shows a 404 page when you select those links through Google but they are still present on the search engine.

During the initial set it up we decided to hide the profiles, it’s not a functionally we want people to have at this time. So, we’d like no visible profile and want that information to also stay off a Google search.

Here’s a sample, should be the second result, the “jmcleod” one.

Hey @mkykits,

the fastest way to remove it instantly from google search you have to request a temporary removal in your google search console. They have good instructions here on how to set it up:

https://developers.google.com/search/docs/guides/advanced/remove-information#i-control-the-web-page

That’s also important because it’s also possible to see the cache of Google. So it’s still possible to see the profiles, even if the profiles are blocked on your page.

Hey @mkykits,

everything should be fine after your request for the temporary removal will be approved. Google will remove this page from their search results and purge their cache of this site. And since you already restricted access to this page the google bot will not be able to read the data again.
