structure – guidance please
Quote from karaki on January 26, 2018, 5:22 amHi – Forums, categories, sub forums, topics, etc – could someone please guide me as to the definition and setting up of a structure?
example of a structure that I need:
Main forum or topic is Home Schooling
underneath that are several areas/categories of discussions such as:
What is Home Schooling?
Education DepartmentCurriculum
Service ProvidersNetworks
and then underneath each of these areas/categories, etc is where there could be related categories/sub forums and where people can post their comments, share, promote their services or products and contact details
eg: under service providers, there could be these types of categories?
venues
transport
study aids
tutoring
and as you click on any of these categories, you get the postings and info from users..
so I just needed some assistance on what goes where..
thanks Al

it depends on you how you build your structure, but have a look at this forum. There exists a category which is called “Asgaros Forum”. In this category there are different forums:
- Announcements
- Support
- etc
A sub-forum would be a forum inside a forum.
A topic is something the user can create inside a forum. For example you created this topic inside the Support-forum.
I hope this helps! 🙂

Quote from Steve on January 26, 2018, 4:50 pmMay I ask for affirmation that I do understand the structure? Please forgive my labeling if not precise.
Primary Forum Title
- Dog Breeding
- Breeding Australian Sheperds
- Topic=Potty training
If this is correct what steps, where do I click to create the Primary Forum Title, the Sub-forum title and then the topic. And how does the user create such sub-categories and topics or can they?
I have just started looking at this today.
Kind regards,

- Dog Breeding (Category)
- Breeding Australian Sheperds (Forum)
- Potty training (Topic)
You can manage the structure (categories and forums) inside the WordPress backend. Check out the Forum -> Structure area.
Topics can be created by users in the frontend of your website (like here). But normal users cannot create Forums or Categories.

Quote from darnoldy on February 3, 2018, 1:58 amI’d like to jump into this discussion of structure with another question… or, at least to get confirmation/correction of my understanding:
A forum must be contained by a category; access permissions are set at the category level; so any forum that needs unique permissions must be created within a separate category.
Is this correct?

Hello darnoldy,
yes, this is correct. Permissions (based on access-settings and suer groups) are set per category. But you can close individual forums if you want to prevent normal users to create content inside it.
