Posting new topics and replies seems very slow
Quote from Ruth77 on February 14, 2020, 6:48 pmWhen posting a new topic or reply, I have recently noticed that there is a noticeable delay after I click Submit before control is returned. I have a second user id that is subscribed to all notifications, and find that user #2 often receives an email notification before control has been returned to user #1.
Although obviously I don’t know the reason for the delay, it looks as though all the db updates and notifications take place before control is returned, rather than them being spawned into a background thread.
Is there something I could reconfigure in order to reduce this delay?
Many thanks, Ruth

Quote from Ruth77 on March 2, 2020, 12:52 pmThis seems to be getting worse – today it took almost two minutes to start a new topic with no attachments after I hit Submit and some posts appear even slower.
Any advice you can give on how to speed things up would be gratefully received as it would appears that some users are just hitting Submit multiple times, with the result that posts are generated multiple times.

It seems that there is a huge delay when your web-server tries to communicate with your mail-server to send out notifications. I suggest you check out its configuration or contact your hosting-provider to have a look into it. There are also certain WordPress-plugins which can be used to configure how WordPress sends out notifications.

Not sure if this is this fits here or deserves its own topic, but the install I have on my company’s intranet is throwing 404’s whenever I try to create a new topic.
The only changes I’ve made so far have been CSS-related via the customizer.. Any idea if this is related to the mail-server issue?
Thanks,
Mike

How is the URL looking like which is throwing a 404-error? It seems that some redirection is not working correctly which can be caused by another extension or your theme.

There are so many plugins available which makes it impossible to guarantee compatibility with every each of them. The only way to figure it out is to disable other plugins one by one for testing purposes until you find the one which is causing this issue.

Sorry about the delay in replying @asgaros (I was sick with “that” virus”). I have raised the issue of the delay with our hosting company, and am awaiting a response. We are currently using WP SMTP Mail to send notifications – are you aware of any particular problems with this plugin, or is there another plugin that you would recommend? Many thanks

I am not aware of any issues with this plugin. In fact I know that some people have difficulties with the default mail-functionality of WordPress so they are using the same plugin which you are using as well without any problems. But at the end it always depends on the configuration and how web-server and mail-server can communicate.
