multiple issues getting forums set up

I really want this to work–because I want to ditch my fb group.

For background, my site/domain has been active since 2011 and I have decent DR.

However, every single password being sent to new registrants is going to spam. I’ve sent multiple emails and posted in the fb group to please look in spam, but still some are not seeing it.

Any way to prevent this from happening?

Also, is there a work around to allow people to register on mobile?

Hey @lisalightner,

I guess that the problem is not your domain or server, but the way WordPress is sending emails by default. To prevent this, I would advise you to setup SMTP:

I changed my stmp. Deliverability is getting better. But I still have a few people unable to register. I went in to help one person, and when I searched for her user name, it said “no users.” But she keeps getting this message.

Hey @lisalightner,

that’s weird. I also tried it on one of my test servers, but I can see users even if they didn’t confirm their email. Do you use any membership or login/register plugins that could interfere with the registration?

I would advise you to search the user directly in the database and check if you can filter the unconfirmed users. If you found out which users are unapproved you can delete them from the database so they will be able to register again.

One more question, I promise, then I’ll stop bugging you.

First, email deliverability is def better now, so thanks for that rec.

I have a large fb group (42k) and I am working on moving them over to my forum. My audience isn’t particularly internet savvy–seriously, some of them still use listservs.

I set up captcha for one day and I got so many emails from people who didn’t know what to do, so I disabled it. Now, my user list is loaded with spam.

Is there something in between that I can do? A large percentage of my audience has disabilities too, so I think that affects the captcha, they truly cannot read it.

At the moment there are not a lot of choices to protect the forum from spam. I’m already working on a solution to that problem in my plugin. So there will be probably basic spam protection for free and advanced filters in a paid plan.

If your spam is only from a specific country you could try to block the country with a plugin:

Or you could use a plugin to approve every user that registers in your forum.

I use the Ban Hammer plugin against spam

There I can block email endings.

My site is German and it is rather unlikely that people with e.g. Register xmmail.ru address to want to actively participate in the forum.

I have now selected the ending xmmail.ru as an example.
But there are many others through which I received spam reports. Since I have the plugin, spam is quiet.
It is problematic if the forum is too international.

If the new user is interested, there is the possibility to contact me and I will add the user manually.

Thanks, I use Wordfence. I can ban entire countries. Most of my content is uniquely American, and only applies to American schoolchildren in our public education system. But, it does apply to American families overseas on US military bases, so i’ve held off on banning entire countries. I will ban the biggest offenders.
