Image Behavior in Posts to Social Media

Forum Version 1.15.11

Wordpress 5.8

Tried with all other plugins deactivated with same results.

I love the forum plugin. I wish it was easier to drive people off of facebook and twitter to use private forums again and I think using images might be the trick. People don’t realize how much control those sites have over their content. Anyway, I have a meme section designed so people can post their horror memes and pics then share to facebook if they like. Honestly, I think it would be really cool to auto-post these to facebook but that would be another topic.

The problem I’m having is the pics showing up on facebook. I don’t know if it is my server or the forum. I have tried copying and pasting the image into the body of the post, uploading as attachment, and using the image button. They all work sporadically. This is what happens when I use one of the methods below and then copy and paste the URL of the post into facebook:

Pasting the image into the post uses the original website image link. It then shows up in the header as og:image meta property which I think is the correct behavior to get it to work on facebook and twitter as a pic in the post and looks like an actual picture but it ends up with the original URL. It also is a hit or miss whether or not it shows up on facebook or twitter in the post. An example is here:

https://www.facebook.com/boorhodes/posts/1197713650653733

Uploading it using the image button makes it look like an article post with the correct attached picture. It also works sporadically after being posted.

Using the upload button at the bottom of the post doesn’t work and I don’t intend to use it.

When these posts are being posted to facebook I can see the images but once I hit post they sometimes stop showing. Did I do something wrong installing this or is my server being weird and that’s why I cannot see the images on facebook? Everything is set to public as far as I can see.

Please also note that I can see the image if I have a featured image on a regular post such as this one:

which shows on FB as well: https://www.facebook.com/boorhodes/posts/1197725357319229

It would be nice to see some form of share to social media button as well. 🙂

Thanks!

Boo

Any ideas?

Hey @spookyboo22,

Facebook is using its own mechanism to fetch images for their previews. It seems like you are using an image that is not saved on your website. That could be a reason that Facebook doesn’t show this image. Can you please try to insert an image that is uploaded to your website.

To check the result you can also use the debugger of facebook:
https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/

You can also use the inline upload option with my plugin “Toolbox for Asgaros Forum”.

OK I tried using the regular upload and that didn’t work. I will try the plugin. Thanks

Yes, thank you! Your toolbox addon worked:
