Forum update failed and plugin disappeared

Recently I attempted a recommended update to the forum plugin on my website and it failed.

When I logged out and logged back in again, I noticed all mention of the plugin had disappeared, as if I never had it – giving me no option to attempt another upgrade.

My question is: can I simply re-install the plugin and will that auto-connect with my WP database to restore the forum?

If not, what other options are there?

Re-installing should work, but it would be good to take a backup (just in case).
